Estômbar, Medieval riverside town in Algarve, Portugal
Estômbar is a medieval town located along the eastern bank of the Arade River, with traditional white buildings that climb the hillside above the water. The houses sit close together, and narrow lanes connect the different levels of the settlement.
The settlement was originally named Sanabus during Arab occupation and held the castle of Abenabace until King Sancho I captured it in 1191. This conquest marked a turning point in the Christian reclamation of the region.
The Igreja de São Tiago displays architectural features from multiple periods, with a Manueline portal and Baroque interior decorations that blend different artistic traditions. When you enter, you immediately notice how these different styles come together in one space.
The town center has many small shops and restaurants for meals and shopping, while the Parque Municipal das Fontes along the riverbank offers space for walking and relaxation. The park is easily accessible on foot and gives visitors a good overview of the area.
The natural limestone springs at Sitio das Fontes preserve an old water mill that still shows traces of its former function. This spring system is the largest in the entire Algarve region and shapes the water and plant life of the place today.
