Natal Caves

Natal Caves is a lava tube near Picos Gordos on Terceira Island, extending roughly 697 meters through volcanic rock with high ceilings throughout. Two separate passages serve as the entry and exit routes, allowing visitors to walk through without retracing their steps.

The site was originally called Galeria Negra before being renamed and opened to the public in 1969. This change marked when authorities began organizing visits and made the space accessible to travelers.

The cave serves as a space for religious ceremonies, hosting Christmas celebrations and other spiritual gatherings that visitors can observe. Its natural chamber creates an unusual setting for these events, giving them a distinct character shaped by the geological space.
