Parque Mayer, theatre district in Lisbon, Portugal

Parque Mayer is an arts and entertainment district in the Santo António neighborhood of Lisbon, set between Avenida da Liberdade and Rua do Salitre. The site brings together several old theatre buildings and open areas, with a handful still in operation today, including the Cine-Teatro Capitólio and the Teatro Maria Vitória.

The land where Parque Mayer stands once belonged to the Mayer family and held a palace built in 1901, which won the Valmor prize in 1902. From 1922, the site was turned into a public entertainment park, replacing an older August fair and growing into a central part of Lisbon's city life.

Parque Mayer is closely tied to the Portuguese revue theatre, a form of live show mixing music, comedy, and dance that was very popular in Lisbon for decades. The Teatro Maria Vitória, one of the few venues still active in the park today, carries on that tradition.

The park sits within walking distance of Avenida da Liberdade, one of Lisbon's main streets, making it easy to reach on foot. A visit in the evening works best if you want to catch one of the theatre shows still running there.

The Cine-Teatro Capitólio, built in 1931, was one of the first venues in Lisbon to feature a moving walkway and rooftop screenings at the time of its opening. It has since been restored and now hosts concerts and events again.
