Medeiros e Almeida House-Museum, Decorative arts collection in central Lisbon, Portugal.
The Medeiros e Almeida House is a museum displaying decorative arts spanning from the 2nd century BC to modern times, arranged across 27 exhibition rooms. The collection of porcelain, furniture, paintings, and silverware is presented within the original residence and a newer wing built on what was once a garden.
António de Medeiros e Almeida, who lived from 1895 to 1986, decided to convert his private residence into a museum to share his extensive collection with the public. This transformation of a family home into a cultural venue reflected changing attitudes about how private collections could serve the community.
The house brings together decorative arts from different regions in a single collection, with Chinese porcelain alongside Dutch paintings, French furniture, and Portuguese objects. Walking through the rooms shows how European and Asian artistic traditions were valued and displayed together in one private home.
The museum is open Monday through Friday starting at 1 PM until 5:30 PM, and Saturdays from 10 AM to 5:30 PM, located at Rua Rosa Araújo 41. Early morning or early afternoon visits on weekends tend to be less crowded and allow more time to see the collection.
The collection holds an impressive group of clocks from different periods, revealing how timekeeping became an art form over the centuries. The dining room displays a complete silver dinner service made by the celebrated English silversmith Paul Storr.
