Sovata, Health resort town in Mureș County, Romania
Sovata is a health resort town nestled at the base of the Gurghiu Mountains, situated between the Corund River and the Târnava Mică valley. The town centers around Lake Ursu, a salt-water lake surrounded by spa facilities and lodging.
The settlement first appears in written records from 1578 and spent centuries under Austro-Hungarian rule as part of Maros-Torda County. In 1918, the territory became part of modern Romania.
The town has a strong Hungarian heritage that shapes everyday life, from the language heard in streets to traditional crafts and festivals where music and dance blend both cultures. This mixture defines the character of the place today.
The town connects to major Romanian cities through national roads and offers many lodging options focused on wellness treatments. Comfortable walking shoes are useful since access to the lake and hiking paths is mainly on foot.
Lake Ursu, the main feature of the town, has an unusual property: water temperature changes noticeably at different depths due to its salt content and how the sun heats the layers. Swimming at various spots in the lake feels quite different depending on where you are.
