A2 motorway, Major motorway in Romania
The A2 is a 206-kilometer motorway connecting Bucharest with the port city of Constanța on the Black Sea coast. It crosses several counties and serves as a major link between the capital and the coastal region.
Construction began under Nicolae Ceaușescu's rule, with the first 18-kilometer section between Fetești and Cernavodă opening in November 1987. The rest of the route was completed gradually over the following decades.
The road passes through different landscape zones of Romania, showing the shift from flatlands to rolling regions. Travelers experience this gradual change in scenery from the area near Bucharest toward the more open spaces of the coastal region.
Drivers must purchase a vignette to use the motorway, and trucks face restrictions on summer weekends. It is helpful to check current road conditions, especially during the peak travel season.
The motorway passes the Cernavodă Bridge complex, where it runs beneath the historic railway bridge built by Anghel Saligny in 1895. This engineering feature shows how modern and historic infrastructure exist side by side.
