"Carmen Sylva" Pedagogical High School, Timișoara, Art Nouveau pedagogical high school in Timișoara, Romania.
The "Carmen Sylva" Pedagogical High School is a three-story brick building in the historic center of Timișoara, recognizable by its polygonal shape and ornate facade. It combines Art Nouveau and Secessionist details with Romanesque decorative touches across its exterior.
The building was designed by architect Lipót Baumhorn and opened in 1903 as a state school for girls, built on land that had previously been part of the city's citadel. Over the course of the 20th century, it changed roles several times before becoming the pedagogical school it is today.
The school takes its name from Queen Elisabeth of Romania, who wrote poetry and prose under the pen name Carmen Sylva. Her literary work was known across Europe during her lifetime, making her name a fitting choice for an institution devoted to learning.
The building sits in the historic center of Timișoara and is easy to spot on foot thanks to its distinctive polygonal outline and brick exterior. As an active school, access to the interior is generally not open to visitors, but the facade can be seen freely from the street.
During both World Wars, the school building was used as a military hospital, first by Romanian forces and then by Soviet troops. This makes it one of the rare school buildings in the region to have served two separate armies in two different conflicts.
