St. George's Cathedral

St. George's Cathedral is a Baroque church made of brick and stone in Timișoara, recognizable by its two tall towers and decorated interior. Inside, nine altars and intricate plasterwork adorn the walls and ceilings throughout the building.

Construction started in 1736 following a royal order and took decades to complete, interrupted by regional conflicts. The building was finished during a period of major change in central Europe.

The cathedral serves as a meeting place for people from different backgrounds who share the same space for worship. The way the interior is arranged and decorated shows the importance this building holds for multiple communities in the region.

During military conflicts in the late 1700s, the cathedral was put to an unexpected use. The interior became a storage facility for salt needed to supply armies, transforming a house of worship into a military supply depot.
