Slimnic fortress

Slimnic fortress is a medieval fortification on Burgbasch Hill with remaining stone walls, a bell tower, and a Gothic chapel. The site spans several areas, including specialized rooms that served different functions within the former settlement.

The fortress was built in the 14th century to protect the road between Sibiu and Medias. It fell to Ioan Zapolya in 1529 after its defensive works remained incomplete.

The site served as a refuge for Saxon settlers living in the region and reflects their building traditions. The chapel and remaining rooms show how the community gathered here.

Access is straightforward, allowing visitors to explore the courtyard and climb the bell tower. From the top, you gain views across the surrounding landscape and the Sibiu region.

A specialized chamber served as a storage room where local residents kept their cured meat supplies during warm months. This practical use shows how everyday needs were woven into the fortress design.
