The Peony Hill Nature Reserve is a protected area covering approximately 50 hectares of meadows, clearings, and forests situated on the North Dobrogea Plateau in Tulcea County. The site preserves diverse habitats that support rare plant life and maintain the ecological character typical of this elevated region.
The area received formal protection status through Law No. 5 enacted on March 6, 2000, and published in Romania's Official Monitor No. 152 on April 12, 2000. This legal designation aimed to safeguard the region's natural features and biological variety for future generations.
The reserve serves as an educational center for botanical research, allowing scientists to study rare plant species in their natural environment.
Access to the reserve is via National Road DN22D connecting Horia and Slava Cercheza, with entry points near Ciucurova village. Visitors should prepare for changing weather conditions and uneven terrain, requiring appropriate footwear and clothing that varies with the season.
The rare Romanian peony grows naturally only on the southern slopes of this hill formation and exists nowhere else in the Dobrogea region. This specialized population makes the area important for studying this remarkable plant in its natural setting.
