Sopotnica Waterfalls, Natural waterfalls in Prijepolje Municipality, Serbia.
Sopotnica Waterfalls are a series of natural waterfalls located in Prijepolje Municipality, in southwestern Serbia. The water drops over layered tufa rock in several stages, with the largest fall reaching about 25 meters (82 feet).
Water mills operated along this river in the past century, used by local communities to grind grain and process textiles. Some of their remains are still visible near the waterfall sections, showing how central the river once was to everyday life here.
The area sits close to the Mileševa monastery, one of the most visited Orthodox monasteries in Serbia, dating back to the 13th century. Many visitors combine both stops in a single day trip, as the two places are just a short drive apart.
The site is explored on foot along paths that cross uneven and sometimes wet terrain, so sturdy shoes are a good idea. Going early in the day gives more time to walk between the different sections without rushing.
The tufa rock here is still growing, meaning the waterfall shapes are slowly changing over time as minerals carried by the water build up new layers. This makes the site look slightly different from one decade to the next.
