Igarka, Port and industrial town in Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia
Igarka is a port town situated on the right bank of the Yenisei River in far northern Russia. The settlement features twelve berths designed for cargo ships and specializes in timber operations.
The town was established in 1929 to create a major transportation hub for the Soviet timber industry in the Arctic region. This founding fundamentally changed the economic landscape of northern Siberia.
The town is home to both Russian settlers and indigenous Siberian communities whose traditions remain visible in local celebrations and gatherings. These groups continue their customs as part of everyday life in the settlement.
Ships can dock here only between July and October when the river is ice-free. All incoming vessels require a pilot and must not exceed 150 meters in length.
The port processes around 450,000 cubic meters of timber annually through specialized berths with a distinctive design. Vessels use an unusual securing method where the stern is anchored against an island structure.
