Oymyakon, Remote village in Sakha Republic, Russia

Oymyakon lies in the Yana-Oymyakon Highlands along the Indigirka River, featuring two valleys that restrict air movement and create extreme cold conditions.

During World War II, the settlement included an airfield for the Alaska-Siberian route, enabling transport of American Lend-Lease aircraft to the Eastern Front.

The name derives from Even language terms referring to water sources, with residents practicing Orthodox Christianity while maintaining connections to Aiyy Faith traditions.

Temperatures below -60°C prevent mercury thermometers from functioning, require flame torches for vehicle starts, and cause electronic devices to malfunction regularly.

Local fishermen prepare stroganina by catching fish, letting them freeze naturally, and creating thin frozen slices that maintain their texture and flavors.
