Nyagan, Industrial center in Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug, Russia
Nyagan is a town in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug of Russia, located on the West Siberian Plain and surrounded by vast coniferous forests and marshlands. Wide streets run through the settlement, where Soviet-era residential blocks stand alongside newer buildings serving the oil industry.
The discovery of oil deposits in 1965 led to the founding of this settlement, which quickly grew into a center for petroleum extraction. Over the following decades, the population expanded as workers and engineers moved here from other parts of the Soviet Union.
Many households prepare fish dishes caught from nearby waters, reflecting the connection between daily life and the Siberian wilderness. Small festivals and gatherings bring residents together, where traditional songs from the region are often heard.
Thick winter clothing is essential, as the cold season lasts many months and temperatures often reach extreme lows. Visitors should be prepared for snow and ice that may make outdoor movement challenging from October through April.
The surrounding forests are home to moose and brown bears, which occasionally wander near the edges of town. Despite its remote location, the settlement has a small theater that hosts local performances.
