Tulymsky Kamen, mountain
Tulymsky Kamen is a mountain range in the northeastern part of the Krasnovishersky District in Perm Krai, stretching roughly 24 kilometers from north to south with cone-shaped peaks separated by gentle saddles. The highest point reaches approximately 1496 meters, and the range consists of volcanic basalt mixed with green shales, with steep slopes angled up to 45 degrees on both western and eastern sides. The ridge is covered with kurums, rounded rocky formations that give the peaks a rugged, untouched character.
The region's history is connected to indigenous peoples who have inhabited these mountains for centuries, and their names reflect the landscape's ruggedness and importance as a living world. Historically, the Ural Mountains served as a natural border between Europe and Asia, and the area has long been known for mineral deposits including precious stones like emeralds and amethysts that have been mined for centuries.
The name Tulymsky Kamen originates from local languages: in Tatar, 'Tulym' means 'rocks sticking out of the river,' and in Komi-Yodzyak it translates to 'rapids.' The Mansi people call the range 'Yaktyl-ya-Nyor,' meaning 'range of rapids river,' or 'Luv-Nyor,' which means 'horse-stone.' These names reflect how deeply indigenous peoples connected this landscape to the rivers and terrain around them.
The best time to visit is from May to August when the weather is milder and the slopes are green, making trails easier to navigate safely. In winter, proper equipment and mountaineering experience are essential since strong winds cross the peaks and avalanches occur on steep slopes, so always check local weather conditions before planning your trip.
The range is the source of several rivers, with western slopes feeding tributaries of the Vishera River and eastern slopes draining into the Bolshaya Moiva. The steep slopes frequently experience avalanches in winter, a dramatic seasonal occurrence that reveals the raw power of the mountain environment and the forces shaping these peaks.
