Khimki, Industrial city in Moscow Oblast, Russia
Khimki is a city in northwest Moscow Oblast that extends across 115 square kilometers (44 square miles) and is home to more than 254,000 people. Positioned about 18 kilometers (11 miles) from central Moscow, the city forms part of the capital's immediate surroundings.
In October 1941, German forces reached this location during Operation Typhoon, marking their closest advance toward the capital. The Red Army held the line and prevented further movement by the Wehrmacht.
The December 1966 memorial at Kilometer 23 on Leningradskoye Highway commemorates the Soviet military defense that protected Moscow during World War II.
Several roads and train connections lead directly to Moscow, making the journey quite straightforward. Sheremetyevo International Airport is nearby and easy to reach.
The city hosted several closed military research facilities for aerospace defense during the Cold War. Foreigners were not allowed to enter the area for decades.
