Ugolnye Kopi, Urban settlement in Chukotka, Russia
The settlement extends across the Arctic tundra on the eastern side of the Anadyr River, opposite to the city of Anadyr in Siberia.
Established in the early 1900s, the settlement developed around coal mining operations, which influenced its Russian name meaning coal pits.
The population consists primarily of mining workers and service personnel, rather than indigenous communities that inhabit other parts of Chukotka.
The Ugolny Airport serves as the main aviation hub for the Chukotka region, providing connections to various destinations including routes to Alaska.
During winter months, residents cross the frozen Anadyr River via an ice road, while summer transportation relies on ferry services.
