Routan Islands, Arctic island in Pevek district, Russia
The Routan Islands are an island group in the East Siberian Sea off the coast of Chaunsky District in Chukotka Autonomous Okrug. The largest island, Bolshoy Routan, stretches about 9.5 kilometers long and 4.5 kilometers wide with elevations reaching 76 meters.
These islands were inhabited long before their documentation by Russians and held importance in regional geography throughout their recorded past. They remained continuously under Russian control from the Imperial period through Soviet times to present-day Russia.
The Chukchi people have called this island group Rovtįn iłirti for generations, a name reflecting their deep connection to this Arctic region that remains meaningful today.
The islands house an Arctic research station reachable only with specialized equipment and transportation in this remote location. Access requires proper preparation due to the harsh environment and distance from the mainland.
The island group forms a natural barrier in Chaunskaya Bay that creates a protected waterway influencing maritime traffic patterns in the region. This geographical layout has shaped shipping routes and approaches in these Arctic waters.
