Chulyshman, Mountain river in Altai Republic, Russia.
The Chulyshman is a mountain river in the Altai Republic that cuts through steep valleys and connects two major lakes. It travels roughly 241 kilometers from its source at Lake Julukul to its mouth at Lake Teletskoye, flowing through narrow canyons with high rocky walls.
For thousands of years, the river served as the lifeline of the region, sustaining early settlements and later communities. The construction of a road into the valley in the 20th century transformed access to the area and ended the reliance on ancient trails.
The river has been a center of life for local communities throughout history, with settlements along its banks relying on its waters and surroundings. Ancient burial mounds near its valley tell the story of peoples who once thrived in this region.
The river freezes over from October through May and becomes difficult to navigate during these months. Plan visits between June and September when conditions are more suitable for exploration and travel.
Near Akkurum, natural erosion has created stone formations that resemble mushrooms, standing up to 7 meters tall. These natural sculptures formed as harder rock layers protected softer stone beneath them from weathering.
