R504 Kolyma Federal Highway, Federal highway between Yakutsk and Magadan, Russia
The R504 Kolyma Federal Highway stretches for 2,031 kilometers (1,262 miles) through remote parts of Siberia, linking Yakutsk with Magadan. The road crosses permafrost zones, taiga forests, and several rivers using basic bridges and seasonal ice crossings.
Construction started in 1932 under Stalin and continued until 1953, with thousands of gulag prisoners working in extreme conditions. Many sections were built in winter when frozen ground was easier to work, though countless workers did not survive the freezing temperatures.
Memorials stand at intervals along the route, marking sites where workers died and making history visible in the present landscape. Rusted truck frames and old tools emerge from the ground in places, reminding travelers of the human cost behind this connection.
Travelers should carry extra fuel, food, and winter gear, as gas stations and repair shops can be several hundred kilometers apart. Summer months turn some sections into muddy tracks, while winter requires caution due to ice and limited visibility.
The permafrost beneath the road partially melts in summer, causing the surface to ripple and making driving unpredictable. In deep winter, temperatures drop below minus 50 degrees Celsius (minus 58 Fahrenheit), and vehicles often need to run continuously to prevent engines from freezing.
