Magadan Oblast, Administrative region in northeastern Russia.
Magadan Oblast is an administrative region in northeastern Russia stretching from the Kolyma Highland ranges to the shores of the Sea of Okhotsk. The territory includes forests, open plains, and mountain ridges crossed by rivers flowing through deep valleys.
The region became a formal administrative unit in 1953 after decades of gold mining operations and forced labor camps managed by the Dalstroy organization. Its establishment followed the end of that period and the shift to civilian governance within the Russian Federation.
The regional museums and institutions in Magadan city preserve artifacts and documents related to indigenous Even people and the mining heritage.
The R504 Kolyma Highway connects the area to the rest of Russia and passes through valleys and mountain passes. Sokol Airport and the Port of Magadan provide access points, with the port relying on icebreaker assistance during colder months.
Frozen ground covers most of the land and shapes building methods and plant life across the region. January temperatures drop far below freezing while July brings only moderate warmth.
