Dauria, Geographic region in Eastern Siberia, Russia
Dauria is a geographic region in Eastern Siberia that spreads across vast steppes and mountain ranges. The area sits between Lake Baikal to the west and where the Shilka and Argun Rivers meet to the east.
The region takes its name from the Daur people who lived there until around the 1650s. Russians later explored the area systematically under the leadership of Vassili Poyarkov.
Mongolian and Russian influences meet in Dauria and shape how people live there today. This blend appears in local customs and the way communities organize their daily routines.
Traveling to the region usually goes through the city of Chita, which works as the main transportation hub. From there you can reach airports and access the Trans-Siberian Railway for onward travel.
The Daurian Nature Reserve protects several ecosystems and is home to rare animal species like the Daurian hedgehog and Daurian jackdaw. These species are found almost nowhere else in the world.
