Bezimyany Island, River island in Ekateringofsky District, Russia.
Bezimyany Island is a small river island in the Ekateringofsky District of Saint Petersburg, enclosed by the Ekateringofka River, the Paper Canal, and the Tarakanovka River. Several bridges cross the waterways around it, linking the island to the surrounding neighborhoods on all sides.
The island appeared on maritime charts as early as 1716, when Saint Petersburg was still being laid out and its waterways were mapped for navigation. Its presence on those early maps shows it was recognized as a distinct landform within the river delta from the very beginning of the city's development.
The name Bezimyany means Nameless in Russian, which sets it apart from the named islands nearby. Locals rarely speak of it by name, which makes it one of those places that exists more in the landscape than in conversation.
The island can be reached on foot via the bridges that cross the surrounding waterways, though the paths along the banks can be uneven in places. Sturdy footwear is a good idea, especially after rain or during spring when the ground tends to be soft.
Despite being mapped for over 300 years, the island has never received an official name and is still simply called Nameless. In a city where nearly every canal and island has a formal designation, that absence is genuinely rare.
