The church was founded in 1798 as a chapel for a girls' boarding school and underwent several relocations before settling at its present location in 1823. Following the Soviet period, the building served various secular functions before returning to religious use in 1996.

The church functioned as a meeting place for the Order of Saint Catherine from 1845, displaying the order's emblem above the entrance. This connection continues to shape how visitors understand its role within the city's religious landscape.
