Oshten

Oshten is a mountain summit in Adygea with five distinct peaks whose slopes display a characteristic light grey color from limestone formations. The rock formations give the range a distinctive appearance that changes with the seasons and weather conditions.

The name Oshten comes from the Adygean language and refers to the permanent snow found on its peaks. This naming reflects the longtime relationship between local peoples and this prominent mountain.

The mountain holds a central position in regional folklore, particularly through stories of ancient battles that took place on its slopes.

The climb from Yavorovaya Glade to the summit follows marked trails but demands serious physical effort and preparation. Weather conditions can change rapidly at altitude, so proper equipment and experience are important for a safe ascent.

Winter snow accumulates heavily on the mountain and gradually transforms into firn, eventually feeding small glaciers that supply several regional rivers. This process makes it an important source of water for downstream areas throughout the year.
