Shumak Springs, Natural mineral springs in Okinsky District, Russia.
Shumak Springs are mineral sources in the Eastern Sayan Mountains of Russia, located along the Shumak River in a remote mountain valley. There are over a hundred individual outlets spread across the site, each carrying water with a different mineral mix and temperature.
Rock inscriptions in Tibetan and Mongolian found near the site show that people knew about these waters long before modern times. The springs remained a place people traveled to for healing across many generations, long before any formal recognition.
The springs have been recognized by people in the region for generations as places with healing properties. Local traditions guide visitors to use different mineral sources according to beliefs about which waters help which conditions.
The springs can be reached on foot in about three days from the village of Arshan, or by helicopter. Visiting during the warmer months makes the trek more manageable, as the mountain paths can be difficult in cold or snowy conditions.
Despite the remote location, a small informal camp with wooden shelters has grown up around the springs over time, used by visitors who stay for days or weeks. This camp was not officially planned but developed naturally as more people began making the journey.
