King Khalid Military City, Military base in northeastern Saudi Arabia
King Khalid Military City is a military base located near Hafar al-Batin in northeastern Saudi Arabia. The installation spreads across a vast area with advanced defense installations, training facilities, and multiple operational zones.
The United States Army Corps of Engineers built this base between 1976 and 1986 as one of the largest military construction projects of its era. The completion marked a major shift in upgrading Saudi Arabia's defense infrastructure.
The military city contains dedicated spaces for prayer, including several mosques spread throughout both residential and operational areas. These facilities reflect the religious life of the soldiers and families living on the base.
The base functions as a complete military community with residential complexes, hospitals, schools, and vehicle maintenance facilities throughout the grounds. Access is restricted and visitors should be aware that special permission is required to enter the installation.
During construction, engineers built one of the world's largest pre-cast concrete plants on site to produce the vast quantities of prefabricated elements needed for the project. This specialized factory itself became an engineering feat that significantly accelerated the building process.
