Najran Valley Dam, Arch dam in Najran Province, Saudi Arabia.
Najran Valley Dam is a concrete structure spanning 140 meters with a height of 73 meters that holds back water from Wadi Najran in southwestern Saudi Arabia. Its reservoir stores enough water to serve both household needs and agricultural irrigation across the region.
Built in 1981 by the Ministry of Water and Electricity, the dam marked a shift toward modern water management in the province. It became one of the first major infrastructure projects designed to control seasonal water flow in this area.
The dam shapes how farmers work throughout the year, providing steady water access to fields in this dry region where farming depends entirely on reliable irrigation.
The dam is easily reached from Najran city, though the surrounding landscape offers little shade in the direct sun. Plan to bring water and sun protection, as the flat terrain provides few places to shelter from the heat.
The spillway system can handle massive water volumes during heavy rains, releasing water swiftly to prevent flooding in the valley below. This dramatic water release is particularly impressive when seasonal storms arrive.
