Al-Fashir, capital city of North Darfur, Sudan
Al-Fashir is a city in North Darfur, Sudan, and serves as the capital of the region. It sits at about 700 meters elevation in a hot, dry climate with simple buildings and busy streets where traders and farmers move about their daily routines. The city functions as a trade hub for cereals and fruits from surrounding fields, with active markets especially in the mornings.
The city began in the late 18th century when a Darfur ruler moved his court there, and a settlement grew around the palace area. British forces took control in 1916 and reshaped the political landscape, though the settlement maintained its role as a caravan stop and later as a trading center.
The best time to visit is from October to February, when mornings are cooler, although afternoons still get very hot. During the wet season from June to September, short rains occur with more humidity, and the city can become difficult to reach.
The city has a long history as an important caravan station for traders crossing the desert and linking different regions of Darfur and neighboring areas. This heritage remains visible today in the active markets where local communities exchange goods and continue their traditional trading relationships.
