Säter Municipality, Municipal seat in Dalarna County, Sweden
Säter Municipality is an administrative area in Dalarna County, in central Sweden, covering forested land, lakes, and the Säter Valley. The Ljustern river runs through the valley and shapes the landscape across the whole area.
Säter received its town charter in 1642, making it one of the older established towns in Dalarna. Its current administrative form dates to 1971, when several separate areas were merged into a single municipality.
The old wooden church of Stora Skedvi still stands in the village and draws visitors who appreciate plain rural architecture. Nearby, several old timber houses show how people in this part of Sweden have traditionally built their homes over generations.
The area sits along the Dala Railway, which connects to Falun, Stockholm, and Mora, so getting here without a car is straightforward. From the town of Säter, forest paths and the river valley are within easy reach on foot.
Silver was extracted in this area as early as 1480, and one of the local mines stayed in operation for over 600 years. That is an unusually long run for a single site and points to how central mining was to life here for so many generations.
