Solsångaren, Bronze sculpture in Gamla stan, Sweden
Solsångaren is a bronze sculpture located in Gamla stan on Helgeandsholmen island in central Stockholm. The figure shows a boy with one leg extended forward, gazing upward at the night sky with a sense of wonder and curiosity.
Carl Milles created this bronze figure in 1926 when his reputation as Sweden's leading sculptor was already well established. The work emerged during a period when he was actively shaping public spaces across the country with his artistic vision.
The statue represents the connection between youth and celestial elements, following the Swedish artistic tradition of incorporating natural elements into public sculptures.
The sculpture stands within walking distance of the Parliament building in Gamla stan and is easily reached via Gamla stan metro station. Visitors can view the figure anytime since it is freely accessible in public space throughout the day and evening.
The 91-centimeter figure develops a greenish patina that shifts in appearance depending on the time of day and angle of sunlight. This natural aging process of the bronze material gives the artwork a living quality that seems to transform throughout the day.
