Kremenec, Mountain peak at Poland-Ukraine border.
Krzemieniec is a mountain summit in the Bieszczady range, sitting at 1221 meters where Poland, Ukraine, and Slovakia meet at a single point. It is the only tripoint shared by these three countries, and marked trails lead to it from each side of the border.
Before World War II, the summit stood at the border between Poland and Czechoslovakia, with no Ukrainian territory involved. After the war, the redrawing of borders brought the Soviet Union, and later independent Ukraine, into this corner of the Carpathians.
The peak carries different names in different languages: Polish speakers call it Krzemieniec, while the Hungarian name Kremenaros means Ruthenian Stone. Standing at the top, a visitor is at once on the soil of three countries, which gives the place a feeling that is hard to find elsewhere.
The summit can be reached from Poland, Ukraine, or Slovakia using marked trails, but conditions and trail upkeep vary by country and season. Near international borders, it is worth checking entry requirements for each side before setting out.
The summit is also recognized as the highest point of the Slovak section of the Bieszczady Mountains, a fact that surprises most visitors who think of it only as a Polish peak. This means the same top counts as the roof of two different national sections of the same range.
