Kono District

Kono District is an area in Sierra Leone's Eastern Province with mountains, rivers, and farmland where cocoa, coffee, and palm oil are grown. Diamond mining operations take place alongside agriculture, shaping the economic landscape of the region.

Diamond deposits found here in the 20th century sparked major growth and economic changes in the region. These mineral riches became the driver of development and drew people from across the country.

Koidu Town serves as the main hub with markets, shops, and services for visitors and residents. The dry season is the better time to visit, as roads become more passable and travel becomes easier.

The area is divided into fourteen chiefdoms, each led by a paramount chief who manages local affairs according to traditional governance systems. This organizational structure remains deeply embedded in how communities function and make decisions.
