Ras al-Ayn, Border city in northeastern Syria
Located at 360 meters elevation, Ras al-Ayn extends along the Syria-Turkey border near the Khabur River in the al-Hasakah Governorate.
The settlement dates back to 8,000 BC and underwent transitions from the ancient Aramean city of Sikkan to the Roman city of Rhesaina.
The population of 29,347 residents includes communities of Kurds, Arabs, Assyrians, Armenians, Chechens, and Turkmen living in the urban area.
The city functions as the administrative center of Ras al-Ayn District, positioned 85 kilometers northwest of Hasakah and 90 kilometers west of Qamishli.
More than 100 natural springs emerge in the area, including Nab'a al-Kebreet, which contains high mineral content with therapeutic properties.
