Ras al-Ayn

Ras al-Ayn is a city in northeastern Syria positioned along the Syria-Turkey border near the Khabur River. It sits at approximately 360 meters elevation and serves as the administrative center for the surrounding district.

The settlement originated in ancient times as the Aramean city of Sikkan before becoming known as Rhesaina under Roman rule. These early periods shaped the foundations of what developed into the modern city.

The city is shaped by Kurdish, Arab, Assyrian, and other communities whose daily lives reflect diverse traditions. Their presence is visible in local neighborhoods, markets, and the way people interact throughout the streets.

The terrain is relatively flat and compact, making it straightforward to navigate and explore different areas. Visitors should note this is a border area where standard safety awareness is advisable.

More than 100 natural springs emerge throughout the area, some containing mineral-rich water recognized for therapeutic uses. These water sources have historically shaped settlement patterns and reveal the region's abundant natural resources.
