Sarouja

Sarouja is a historic district in Damascus made up of several connected neighborhoods marked by narrow lanes with stone buildings. The area brings together traditional marketplaces, public baths, mosques, and religious schools that form a dense network of commercial and community spaces.

The district was founded in the 13th century as the first settlement outside Damascus city walls and grew as its own center. In the 14th century it suffered major destruction during Timur's invasion, a blow that changed its character for generations.

The neighborhood keeps old craft traditions alive through workshops where artisans work using age-old techniques. This way of working shapes daily life here and makes it a living place of skilled craftsmanship.

The district lies north of Old Damascus and covers a large area with seven different neighborhoods, each with its own shops and facilities. Walking through the area on foot is the best way to experience the narrow lanes and discover hidden squares.

A major fire in July 2023 destroyed several important palaces, including the Palace of Abdul Rahman Pasha Al-Yusuf and parts of the well-known Al-Azm Palace. This event dealt a serious blow to the district and its architectural treasures.
