Patara Elephant Farm, Elephant sanctuary in Chiang Mai, Thailand
Patara Elephant Farm is an elephant sanctuary set in the hills south of Chiang Mai, in northern Thailand. The grounds are made up of open grazing land where the animals move freely, alongside dedicated spaces for care and rehabilitation.
The farm was founded in 2001 by Theerapat Trungprakan to rescue elephants that had been kept in cities, often in poor conditions. Over the years it grew from a small operation into a rehabilitation center that also takes in injured and neglected animals.
Many of the mahouts working on the farm come from Karen communities and learned to care for elephants from their parents and grandparents. Visitors can watch how this knowledge is put into practice during daily routines with the animals.
The main day program lasts several hours and involves hands-on activities like feeding and bathing the elephants, so water-resistant clothes and sturdy shoes are a good idea. The terrain is hilly and paths can get muddy, so it helps to come prepared for uneven ground.
The farm follows a four-point program of rescue, recovery, breeding, and training with the goal of returning elephants to the wild. This makes it one of the few places that works toward reintroducing animals to natural habitats rather than simply housing them.
