Vahdat, city
Vahdat is a city in western Tajikistan situated in a valley along the Kofarnihon River, about 21 kilometers east of Dushanbe. The Gissar Range forms the southern boundary and the Karategin Range rises to the north, framing the settlement where traditional houses mix with newer buildings.
The city went through several name changes reflecting different periods of its past. It was called Yangi-Bozor in the late 1920s, then Orjonikidzeobod from 1936 to 1993 named after a Soviet figure, and later Kofarnihon until 2006. The current name Vahdat, meaning unity in Tajik, was adopted in 2006 to represent a fresh start for the community.
Vahdat is home to Tajiks, Uzbeks, Russians, Tatars, and Afghan refugees who contribute to the city's diverse cultural landscape. Walking through the streets, you encounter different languages and traditions mixed into daily community life.
Vahdat is compact and easily explored on foot, especially in the downtown area with shops and public transport options. Walking lets you see local routines up close, while shared taxis and buses run frequently at very low costs for moving between neighborhoods.
Vahdat is home to a prison holding inmates connected to extremist organizations. In 2019, a major riot broke out there that drew international attention to the complex security challenges facing the region and shocked the local community.
