The Monument to Ismail Samani is a large bronze statue that stands at Ozodi Square in the center of Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan. The figure depicts a ruler holding a sword and a scroll, raised on a tall, ornately decorated pedestal.
Ismail Samani ruled in the late 9th century and founded the Samanid Empire, which covered large parts of Central Asia and the Iranian plateau. The monument was put up in 1999, after independence, to honor him as a symbol of Tajik identity.
The figure is dressed in royal garments that follow Persian craft traditions, with golden details on the pedestal and the statue itself. The square around it draws families and people out for a walk, especially on holidays and weekends.
The monument stands at Ozodi Square in the city center and is easy to reach on foot from several main streets. Visiting during the day gives the best view of the golden details on the statue and pedestal.
The pedestal of the monument is decorated with carved reliefs and bands of Persian script that many visitors walk past without noticing. These inscriptions are one of the few examples of Persian calligraphy displayed on a public monument in Dushanbe.
