Supreme Assembly, National bicameral legislature in Dushanbe, Tajikistan
The Supreme Assembly is a bicameral legislature with 63 representatives in the lower chamber and 33 members in the upper chamber. It operates from a building completed in 2024, featuring a 70-meter dome and multiple halls designed to accommodate around 1,500 people.
This body replaced the Soviet legislature in 1995, establishing a new framework for governance after independence. The shift reflected the country's transition from Soviet rule to a new political structure.
Sessions take place in both Tajik and Russian, showing how the country balances its different language communities. Visitors can observe this bilingual approach firsthand during legislative meetings.
The building is located in central Dushanbe and its distinctive dome makes it easy to spot. Visitors should note that access to certain areas may be restricted, so it is advisable to contact ahead if you wish to observe sessions.
Eight seats in the upper chamber are set aside for direct presidential appointments, and former presidents gain lifetime membership automatically. This arrangement creates a direct link between the current legislature and past leadership.
