Aghbai Shahriston, Mountain pass in Viloyati Sughd, Tajikistan
Aghbai Shahriston is a mountain pass in northern Tajikistan that links the Sughd region in the north with the central parts of the country. The road runs across open, rocky terrain at roughly 3,400 feet (about 3,400 meters) in elevation, with no facilities along the route itself.
The pass has been used for centuries by traders and nomads moving between the northern plains and the central regions of Central Asia. In more recent times, it was supplemented by the construction of the Shahriston Tunnel, which makes the crossing safer in winter.
The pass connects the northern lowlands of Tajikistan with the central mountain regions and is still used by truck drivers and local travelers who avoid or cannot use the tunnel. Driving the route, you pass through a series of villages and pastures that show how life on both sides of the mountains is organized.
The road over the pass can be closed in winter and spring due to snow or ice, so checking conditions before departure is important. There are no fuel stops or shelters along the way, so carrying enough supplies and warm clothing is necessary.
Although the Shahriston Tunnel allows drivers to pass directly under the mountains, some prefer the old road because it requires no toll. This means that a small but steady flow of vehicles still uses the mountain road today.
