Suffa RT-70 radio telescope, Radio telescope in Jizzakh Region, Uzbekistan.
The Suffa RT-70 is a radio telescope facility with a 70-meter-wide antenna positioned on the Suffa plateau at approximately 2,324 meters in elevation. The installation is designed to observe millimeter-wave frequencies between 100 and 300 GHz for space research purposes.
The project started in the late 1980s but halted during the Soviet Union's dissolution. Work resumed with Russian involvement beginning in 2008.
The site is part of a scientific partnership between Uzbekistan and Russia, connecting to a worldwide network of similar installations. Visitors can see how this project brings together nations of the region and demonstrates that scientific work crosses borders.
The facility sits roughly 200 kilometers southwest of Tashkent in a remote mountain region with sparse infrastructure. Visitors should prepare for remote conditions and check access options beforehand.
The facility is currently only about 50 percent complete, yet it already enables advanced scientific measurements. Scientists hope it will become fully operational between 2023 and 2028.
