Tataouine, Administrative division in southern Tunisia
Tataouine Governorate extends across 38,889 square kilometers of desert terrain, making it the largest administrative region in Tunisia.
The region transformed from a French military garrison town in 1892 into an administrative center, marked by the construction of its first mosque in 1898.
The local Berber communities maintain their traditional underground cave dwellings, built into the mountains throughout the governorate territory.
Seven delegations subdivide the governorate into 64 sectors, with transportation connections through El Borma Airport and the Remada airbase.
A meteorite containing rare bacteria Ramlibacter tataouinensis fell near Tataouine in 1931, leading to scientific discoveries about desert-adapted microorganisms.
