Amasya Province, Administrative province in northern Turkey
Amasya Province is located in the Black Sea Region and covers fertile plains crisscrossed by rivers, most notably the Yeşilırmak. Agriculture dominates the landscape, with extensive apple orchards, tobacco crops, and fields of peaches, cherries, and okra.
The ancient city of Amaseia served as the administrative center of the Kingdom of Pontus and later became a metropolis under Roman rule. The region remained strategically important through the Ottoman period, when it developed as a major educational hub.
The region developed as a center for Islamic learning, where schools trained scholars and officials who shaped governance across the empire. This educational tradition remains visible in the architecture and layout of the old town.
The autumn harvest season is an excellent time to visit, when the apple orchards and fruit cultivation are at their peak and the countryside comes alive. The terrain is mostly flat to gently rolling, making it easy to navigate and accessible for most visitors.
Ancient rock tombs are carved into the limestone cliffs along the Yeşilırmak River, dating back to the Hellenistic rulers of Pontus. These striking burial monuments still dominate the riverbanks today and offer a tangible connection to the region's ancient past.
