Silifke Castle, Medieval fortress in Silifke, Turkey.
The castle stands at 160 meters elevation on a hilltop, featuring an oval layout measuring 250 meters in length and 75 meters in width.
The Knights Hospitaller received the castle in 1210 from King Leo I to defend against Seljuk invasions, leading to extensive reconstruction between 1210 and 1220.
The fortress demonstrates the military architectural techniques of the Byzantine period, with its strategic position controlling the southern section of the Göksu valley.
Visitors can explore the surviving exterior walls, vaulted ceilings, and under-crofts that showcase the medieval construction methods used in the fortress.
The castle successfully repelled an attack by the Sultan of Konya in 1216, proving its effectiveness as a defensive stronghold in the region.
