Termal, Small town in Yalova province, Turkey
Termal is a small town in the Yalova province of Turkey, situated close to the border with Bursa province. It sits in a forested valley surrounded by hills, and its main feature is a cluster of hot springs with mineral-rich waters.
The hot springs in this area have been in use for around 4,000 years, with the first bath structures built during the Byzantine period. The Ottomans later made it a destination for rulers and nobles, and several buildings from that era still stand.
The thermal baths have long been a gathering place for locals and visitors who come for rest and treatment. Those who walk through the older bathing halls notice the Ottoman-era stone work that is still in use today.
Termal is easy to reach by bus or car from Yalova, and direct connections from Istanbul are available too. Visitors planning to use the thermal facilities should allow extra time, as the various pools and bathing sections each have different conditions and entry rules.
At an international competition held in Rome, the waters of Termal were once judged the most therapeutic and awarded a gold medal. This is the only award of its kind ever given to a thermal spring in Turkey.
