Çiğli, Administrative district in İzmir, Turkey.
Çiğli is an administrative district in the northwestern part of İzmir Province, located near where the Gediz River meets the gulf. The area consists of 26 neighborhoods and includes a major organized industrial zone with many factories.
The settlement began with Turkish refugees arriving from the Russo-Turkish War starting in 1877. Later waves of migration brought more people from regions hit by major earthquakes in eastern Anatolia.
The name comes from the Turkish word 'çiğ' meaning dew, reflecting the historical marshlands that once dominated the area. The region's watery landscape shaped how people named and thought about this place.
The district is accessible from central İzmir through several routes and transportation options. Much of the area is industrial, so a car or local transport works best for getting around.
The Gediz delta hosts more than 200 bird species, many of them migratory birds that stop here while traveling between Africa and Europe. This wetland area serves as a crucial stopover point for birds across different seasons.
