Nangang District, Administrative district in Taipei, Taiwan.
Nangang District is an administrative area in southeastern Taipei that blends residential neighborhoods with commercial and research spaces. The Keelung River defines much of its eastern border, while the terrain slopes gently with a mix of older buildings and newer construction.
The area began as farmland with rice cultivation before shifting to industrial production in the mid-1900s. This transformation attracted manufacturers and later research institutions, reshaping the district's purpose over several decades.
Tea farming shaped the area's identity, particularly on Jiuzhuang tea mountain where Pouchong tea production began generations ago. Visitors can still see this heritage reflected in the landscape and local shops that celebrate the tea tradition.
The district has good public transportation connections through Nangang Station, which handles metro and railway services efficiently. The terrain is hilly in places, so comfortable walking shoes are helpful when exploring the area on foot.
Academia Sinica, Taiwan's leading research institution, operates its main campus here among residential neighborhoods. The same area also hosts the Taipei World Trade Center, creating an unusual mix of scholarly work and commercial activity.
