Longmen Nuclear Power Plant, Nuclear power facility in Gongliao District, Taiwan
Longmen Nuclear Power Plant is a nuclear facility under construction in Gongliao District, Taiwan. The facility was originally designed to house two advanced boiling water reactors with a combined potential output capacity of 2,700 megawatts.
Construction began in 1999 with an initial budget of 280 billion New Taiwan dollars and scheduled completion by 2004. Work was later halted due to safety concerns and changing energy policies, leaving the facility unfinished after more than two decades.
The nuclear facility sparked widespread public debates and demonstrations, leading to several referendums about its future operational status. The discussions reflected fundamental questions about energy policy and technical safety that engaged many citizens.
Equipment from reactor number two was transferred to reactor number one, while unused nuclear fuel was returned to the United States. The facility remains under government administration and is not accessible to the public.
The facility remains one of the most debated infrastructure projects in the region, with its future continuing to be subject to political negotiations. Different technical assessments of the plant's condition have been commissioned over the years and have led to varying recommendations.
