Liuying Daitianyuan, Chinese temple in Liouying District, Tainan City, Taiwan.
Liuying Daitianyuan is a Chinese temple in Liuying District, Tainan, Taiwan, dedicated to the Taoist deity Xuantian Shangdi. The complex has a main hall with decorated roof ridges, painted wood carvings, and a courtyard used for rituals and offerings.
The temple was built in 1971, replacing an older shrine that could no longer accommodate the growing local community. It has been renovated several times since then, each time keeping the original look largely intact.
The temple is dedicated to Xuantian Shangdi, one of the most widely worshipped deities in Taiwan. Visitors can watch worshippers offer incense and fruit at the main altar, a ritual that happens throughout the day.
The temple is in Liuying District and is most easily reached by train to Liuying Station, which is within walking distance. Visitors should cover their shoulders and knees, as this is an active place of worship.
The temple roof is covered with figures made from colored ceramic shards depicting scenes from Taoist legends, a technique known as jiannan. These ceramic pieces are assembled by hand into figures, a craft that is becoming increasingly rare in Taiwan.
