Gangshan Water Tower

Gangshan Water Tower is a concrete structure in the Gangshan District of Kaohsiung designed to distribute water to surrounding residential areas. The building has a simple, functional design typical of utility infrastructure from that period.

The structure opened in 1938 during Japanese rule and supplied water to the city for decades before being shut down in 1992. Newer systems eventually took over the role of distributing water to the area.

The tower reflects Japanese colonial building techniques from the early 1900s and remains visible as a reminder of that era's industrial approach. Visitors walking through the neighborhood can observe how this structure once connected directly to daily life for residents.

The structure sits in a residential area of the city and can be reached easily from nearby train stations. Keep in mind this is a former utility building not open for tours, so visiting means viewing it from outside the neighborhood.

The tower was part of a larger water system connected to an aqueduct completed just years before it was built. This link between two construction projects shows how the city developed its water infrastructure in stages.
